Choosing the Right Skip for Your Project

Selecting the correct skip for your project is important to ensure you get the most cost-effective skip possible, for the correct type of waste. If you are unsure of the correct sized skip for your project or are unsure of what type of skip you require then we are happy to help! If you contact us, one of our friendly team members will be able to guide you to the correct size based on the information you provide.

The first thing to consider is the type of waste that you will need to dispose of and estimate the amount. Domestic clearances such as garden and home renovations will typically require a 3 to 8-yard skip. Whereas a construction or industrial project may require a much larger skip such as 20 to 40 yards. For more information, contact our skip hire specialists to get a free, no-obligation quote or use our skip hire size guide below to figure out what sized skip you may need.

Skip Hire Size Guide

Skip Type Dimensions Capacity

6 Yard Skip 10ft (L) x 5ft (W) x 4ft (H) 50-60 bin bags of waste
8 Yard Skip 11ft (L) x 7ft (W) x 5ft (H) 70-80 bin bags of waste
10 Yard Skip 12ft (L) x 6ft (W) x 6ft (H) 90-100 bin bags of waste
12 Yard Skip 13ft (L) x 7ft (W) x 6ft (H) 110-120 bin bags of waste
14 Yard Skip 13.5ft (L) x 6ft (W) x 6ft (H) 130-140 bin bags of waste
16 Yard Skip 14ft (L) x 6ft (W) x 7ft (H) 150-160 bin bags of waste
20 Yard Skip 20ft (L) x 8ft (W) x 4.5ft (H) 210-220 bin bags of waste
40 Yard Skip 20ft (L) x 8ft (W) x 8.5ft (H) 420-440 bin bags of waste

6 Yard skips are the most popular option for those looking to dispose of home waste with a max capacity of around 6 tonnes. Also known as the builder’s skip or the classic 6-yarder, it will effortlessly hold a 3-piece sofa, kitchen unit, garden waste and anything in between.

In comparison, 20-yard skips are fantastic for renovations, construction site clearances and large commercial premise clearances.

Our largest skips are our 40-yard skips, perfect for bulky items, commercial use and industrial sites. To book any of the above, please fill out the enquiry form on this page and our friendly team will get back to you with the most budget-friendly quote for your needs.

Materials Which Can Be Added to Our Skips

At the point of booking your skip, it’s important to think of the materials which you will be adding because there are some materials which can’t be mixed. Some skips are also cheaper than others, so by letting us know which materials will be added we can give you the most cost-effective rate possible. Please be sure to study the list of prohibited items and products which cannot be loaded and make sure that the skip is loaded to the maximum level. Overfilling a skip may become a hazard as items may fall out and cause injuries

Mixed Waste

A mixed waste skip is the most common to hire as it allows you the freedom to load with the most variety of products. Ideal for building waste or a house clearance, this form of skip is perfect for most waste removal requirements.

Wood

The skip must be filled with 100% wood items such as cabinets, tables, desks and anything in between, as long as it’s made from wood.

Hardcore

This Skip can only include hardcore materials such as concrete, bricks, stone, gravel or rubble. If the hardcore waste is contaminated with any other waste, it will not qualify for this skip.

Soil & Stone

Our soil skip hire can only include this specific material sourced from building sites, garden work, home-building projects etc. If the soil is contaminated with hazardous waste such as oil, paint etc, it will not qualify for this specific skip.

Green Waste

Our green waste skip hire can only include organic waste such as tree branches, grass, plants, leaves and garden waste with similar characteristics.

Our Reliable Skip Hire Service Process

Hiring a skip at Penny’s is a straightforward process. Your first task is to decide the type and size of skip you require. You can do this by working out what materials you need to dispose of and roughly how much. We have a guide skip-hire size guide towards the top of this page which will help you work out the correct size for you.

Once the size and type of skip have been decided, you can then book the skip online or over the phone. If you prefer to book online, then go to our book online form where you will be asked to choose a series of options including your postcode, size skip, closed or enclosed skip, the date your skip is needed, date of collection, and material you need to dispose of. If you would prefer to do this over the phone, we can also help answer any other questions you may have regarding skip hire, and go through the process of getting a road permit if this is needed.

After booking the perfect skip, we’ll deliver it on the agreed-upon date. Once you’re finished with it, we’ll collect the skip on your chosen date. From there, we take it to our recycling centre where it’s sorted into recyclable and non-recyclable materials.

Please note, we require 24 hours’ notice for a skip hire delivery and 48 hours’ notice for collection. This means if you need a skip for a Wednesday, you will have to place the skip order by Monday. We are closed on Saturdays and Sundays so please factor this in. If you have any questions or would like to book a skip over the phone then call us at 01761 700957.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is it to hire a skip?

There are various factors that may contribute towards the cost of skip hire including your location, whether the skip will be placed on your driveway or roadside, whether you need an open or closed skip, what sized size you need and what materials you will need to dispose of. Other charges also may apply if you require a permit to store the skip on the roadside which you can do through your local council, or we can help you with your permit.

We offer cost-effective skip hire in Bath and our skips start at just £140+VAT! If you require a skip in Bath, you can book online today by completing the form on our website, or book over the phone by calling us at 01761 700957. If you require a skip over 12 yards then you will have to book your skip over the phone.

Do I need a skip permit?

If you are looking to store the skip on the roadside, you will need a skip permit which is required by law. This is something that our team will be happy to help with, just advise us at the point of booking so that we can ensure everything is in place and ready for when we deliver your skip. Skip permits typically last between 1-4 weeks so when organising the permit, ensure you choose a period which is suitable for your requirements, although an extension can be applied for if needed.

How do you load a skip?

As a rule of thumb, it is most effective to put the heaviest & flatter products in the bottom of the skip, followed by tessellate objects, bulky items and finally loose debris. Never overfill your skip as this could lead to additional charges/penalties and other problems at the time of the collection, putting others in danger.

What precautions can I take to avoid damage to my driveway caused by the skip?

Our drivers take great precautions when they deliver the skip to your property. When placed on a blocked driveway or soft tarmac. You’ll need to take into consideration the weight of the skip when planning where to place it, but to ensure that the paving doesn’t scratch, we usually recommend placing the skip on top of wooden blocks.

What material can’t I put in a skip?

There are various items which are hazardous or harmful which can’t be added to a skip. These items include asbestos, paint, gas cylinders, oil, petrol, diesel, explosives, batteries, fluorescent tubes, tyres, liquids, solvents, medical waste, mattresses and electrical appliances such as fridges, freezers, TVs, monitors and more. If any forbidden materials are added to the skip, we may refuse to collect your skip until all materials are removed. This would further delay the collection time for your skip, resulting in extra charges. If we find forbidden items within the skip after collection then fines may occur.

What areas do deliver your skips to?

Pennys Group offers skip hire in Bath and surrounding areas throughout Somerset and Wiltshire. This includes Frome, Paulton, Trowbridge, Radstock, Westbury, Midsomer Norton, Weston-Super-Mare, Warminster, Congresbury, Nailsea, and surrounding areas.
