Demolition Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Does Demolition Work Cost?

Our demolition work is quoted bespoke to your specific needs and requirements. One of our demolition experts will visit the site before the project is underway to assess the project and provide you with a clear breakdown of the costs involved. You can also contact us online for a rough estimate on pricing for smaller projects.

What Asbestos Removal Do You Cover?

All our staff are trained to deal with all non-licensed asbestos from outside the home or in derelict zones such as abandoned buildings. If necessary, we will employ and manage 3rd party licensed contractors to remove any notifiable licensed asbestos alongside our works. Licensed asbestos removal is different to non-licensed.

We are able to:

  • Clean up small quantities of loose/fine debris containing ACM (Asbestos Containing Materials) dust
  • Carefully remove and dispose of non-licensed ACM products
Examples of Non-Licensed Asbestos
  • Asbestos cement products (eg on roof sheeting, tiles and rainwater goods)
  • Asbestos in ropes, yarns and woven cloth
  • Asbestos gaskets or asbestos rope cords (including removal as part of repair and upkeep of equipment) if this can be done without substantial breakage
  • Asbestos-containing thermoplastic and vinyl floor tiles, bitumen roof felt, shingles, damp-proofing coatings, and mastics
  • Asbestos-containing felt and paper
  • Plastic paint coatings, PVC floors, panels and sealing compounds
  • Asbestos-containing conveyor belts/drive belts, bonded rubber, electric cables
  • Resin-based ACMs such as friction products (eg brake linings)
  • Painting/repainting AIB that is in good condition

Further information can be found on the HSE website.

What's the Difference between Licensed and Non-Licensed Asbestos?

Depending on what type of asbestos your project contains we carry out surveys that can determine what type of asbestos you have so that the appropriate measures and actions can be applied.

There are two types of asbestos works.

Non-Licensed Asbestos

Non-licensed asbestos removal is work where there’s low exposure to asbestos.

At Pennys Group we undertake all non-licensed asbestos works for you and can dispose of non-licensed ACMs safely.

Examples of Non-Licensed Asbestos
  • Asbestos cement products (e.g. on roof sheeting, tiles and rainwater goods)

Licensed Asbestos

Most higher-risk work with asbestos must only be done by a licensed contractor. If we discover that there’s licensed asbestos on our sites we will employ a 3rd party licensed contractor to undertake the licensed works.

Examples of Licensed Asbestos and Work
  • Removing sprayed coatings (limpet asbestos)
  • Removal or other work which may disturb pipe lagging
  • Any work involving loose fill insulation
  • Work on asbestos millboard
  • Cleaning up significant quantities of loose/fine debris containing ACM dust (where the work is not sporadic and of low intensity, the control limit will be exceeded or it is not short duration work)
  • Work on AIB, where the risk assessment indicates that it will not be of short duration
  • Where worker exposure to asbestos is not sporadic and of low intensity; or where the risk assessment cannot clearly demonstrate that the control limit will not be exceeded i.e. 0.1 asbestos fibres per cubic centimetre of air (0.1 f/cm3) (averaged over a four hour period); or
  • On asbestos coating; or on asbestos insulation or asbestos insulating board where the risk assessment demonstrates that the work is not short duration work, eg when work with these materials will take no more than two hours in any seven day period, and no one person works for more than one hour in that two hour period.
Where Should I Dump Demolition Debris?

Demolition debris should always be taken care of by a licenced professional, especially when containing asbestos and other harmful material. Here at Pennys Group, we also offer waste management services ensuring that all of the debris from your recent demolition project can be taken care of correctly. Our recycling centre is also an option for those with recyclable materials.

Why Is Demolition Required For Certain Buildings?

Demolition is often required when a building has become derelict and the landowner is looking to undertake a new construction project. If a building has asbestos present it may also be demolished and rebuilt in the future.
